Systems Work, Open Source Roots

From creating Linux distributions used by millions to building practical tools, secure AI workflows, and technical strategy for serious infrastructure.

About Daniel Robbins

Daniel Robbins
Daniel Robbins – Systems Architect and Open Source Creator
My journey in technology has been defined by a single, driving passion: building elegant, resilient systems from first principles.

Most people know me as the creator of Gentoo Linux, an Open Source operating system that challenged the conventions of how software should be built and managed. I'm incredibly proud that the foundational work on Gentoo was adopted by Google to become the basis for ChromeOS, powering millions of Chromebooks around the world. My work continued with Funtoo Linux, an evolution of those original ideas that has now been retired as a distribution.

Leading these large-scale Open Source projects was a masterclass in community, collaboration, and the raw, creative energy of distributed development.

But my experience extends far beyond the Open Source world. I've been fortunate to apply my architectural vision in some of the most demanding environments imaginable — as part of Microsoft's Platform Strategy team, as a Senior Principal at E*TRADE Financial, and delivering security, performance, visualization and technology solutions for various government agencies.

As a technical author, I shared my insights with a global audience as a regular columnist for IBM developerWorks, authoring over 20 articles on advanced Linux and Unix topics.

This blend of experiences — from the collaborative chaos of Open Source to the rigorous demands of enterprise and government, and technical writing — has given me a unique perspective. I have both the deep, hands-on knowledge of a systems programmer and the broad, strategic vision of an architect who has seen what it takes for technology to succeed at scale.

What I'm Building Now

I keep two lanes for this work. BreezyOps is my professional home for consulting, technical advisory work, and company projects. Kernel Seeds is the Open Source home for durable tools like Keychain and for smaller systems components that are ready to stand on their own.

This site is my professional technical outlet — a place to explain what I'm building, what I have learned, and where my work is headed. Right now I am focused on practical AI developer infrastructure: secure model access, local and open-weight model integration, agentic coding workflows, and the glue needed to make these systems useful for real teams.

Some projects are mature and widely used. Others are experiments and explorations. All of them reflect my commitment to building elegant, resilient systems from first principles.

While my primary focus is on my own work, I occasionally take on focused consulting for serious technical challenges. If you are working on systems architecture, secure AI infrastructure, developer productivity, or a related problem, reach out by email.
